Blake, Sabathia lead Indians past Red Sox

08/02/2006 -
Boston, MA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Casey Blake homered and drove in two runs, and
C.C. Sabathia threw eight innings, as the Indians beat the Boston Red Sox,
6-3, at Fenway Park.
Joe Inglett also homered for Cleveland, which rebounded after suffering a
shocking 9-8 loss Monday on David Ortiz' three-run homer in the bottom of the
ninth inning. Victor Martinez had two RBI for the Indians, who snapped a
three-game slide.
Blake has three homers and seven RBI in the first two contests of the four-
game series.
Mark Loretta homered in the third inning for the Red Sox, who fell into a
virtual tie for first place with the Yankees atop the AL East. Alex Gonzalez
added a two-run shot off Fernando Cabrera in the ninth inning for Boston,
which lost for the fourth time in six games.
The injuries continued to pile up for the Red Sox Tuesday, as the team put
catcher Jason Varitek on the 15-day disabled list due to an injured knee.
There were reports prior to the game that he would need surgery and be out 4-
to-6 weeks. Third baseman Mike Lowell left the game in the top of the ninth
inning due to a contusion in his right foot.
The news came one day after the Red Sox put right fielder Trot Nixon on the
15-day disabled list with a strained right biceps.
Sabathia (8-7), who snapped a personal three-game skid, allowed 10 hits,
struck out eight and walked one.
Jason Johnson, who made 14 starts for the Indians to begin the 2006 season
before being sent to Boston for future considerations in a June 21 deal,
suffered the loss. Johnson (3-11) lost his seventh straight outing after
surrendering nine hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings.
Jason Michaels and Martinez had RBI singles in the first inning and Blake led
off the third with his 15th homer of the year, a blast into the seats above
the Green Monster.
Loretta hit a ball over the wall in left field to cut the deficit in half, but
the Red Sox couldn't capitalize on a threat in the fifth. Kevin Youkilis was
cut down at the plate after trying to score from second on a Manny Ramirez
single to left field. There was a strong throw from Michaels in left. Youkilis
slid by Martinez, who reached back to make the tag, but replays showed he
barely missed Youkilis' helmet. Nevertheless, home plate umpire John
Hirschbeck made the out call.
The Red Sox fell apart in the seventh when the Indians extended to a 5-1 lead.
Travis Hafner doubled and scored on a Martinez single to right field. Martinez
advanced to second on a passed ball and scored on a Blake single to left.
Inglett led off the eighth by homering off Bryan Corey, who was making his
first appearance with the Red Sox after being acquired Sunday from Texas.
Gonzalez homered to left field for the final margin.
Game Notes
Johnson is 0-5 lifetime against the Indians...Ramirez extended his hitting
streak to 17 games...Grady Sizemore had three hits and scored once for
Cleveland, which outhit the Red Sox, 13-11.
