The infection developed after Rios fouled a ball off his shin in a game
against Washington on Tuesday. He has been hospitalized for two days using
antibiotics to try to kill the infection.
To replace him, the team purchased the contract of outfielder Chad Mottola
from Triple-A Syracuse. Mottola will be in uniform for Sunday's series finale.
Rios has 15 home runs and 53 runs batted in with a .330 batting average in 72
games this season for Toronto.
