Blues befuddle Blackburn to keep pace with UnitedSoccer Betting Lines02/01/2007 - London, England (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Chelsea kept pace with leaders Manchester United on Wednesday as the Blues recorded a 3-0 win over Blackburn at Stamford Bridge. Didier Drogba opened the scoring six minutes into the match, and Frank Lampard and Salomon Kalou each added an insurance tally to keep Chelsea within striking distance of Premiership leaders Manchester United, who thumped Watford 4-0 on Wednesday to maintain their six-point lead. The first half started well for Blackburn as the visitors looked the more threatening side in the opening five minutes. However, Chelsea took advantage of its first scoring chance to move in front after six minutes. Lampard pounced on a loose ball at midfield and sent it to Drogba, who carried the ball down the left side. The Ivory Coast international then held off a defender as he dribbled inside the box and fired a low shot just inside the far post to give the Blues the opener. The hosts nearly doubled their lead 10 minutes later, but Blackburn keeper Brad Friedel was called upon to make a fine save to keep the ball out. Ashley Cole sent Michael Ballack to the left corner with a neat back-heel. The big German then drove a low cross towards the near post for Andriy Shevchenko, who redirected the ball on net. However, a fine reaction save by the American keeper pushed the ball aside and kept it a one-goal game. Rovers then picked up their play and attacked the Chelsea defense. Stephen Warnock had a great opportunity to level the contest as he was played in behind the defense and looked to be a good bet to score. However, a desperation tackle from behind by Chelsea's Michael Essien deflected the ball away from Warnock and out of play. After a handful of near misses, Lampard doubled the Chelsea lead with a tremendous strike in the 67th. Lampard played the ball to John Mikel at midfield and later took the return pass 30-yards from goal. After taking a touch, Lampard fired a shot between two defenders that sailed over the head of Friedel and just under the cross bar to make it 2-0. Blackburn's best chance to find the scoreboard came in the 83rd when Ryan Nelsen headed a cross back towards the middle of the goal for Benny McCarthy, who was set up at the top of the six-yard box. McCarthy then headed a shot on goal, but was thwarted by Chelsea keeper Petr Cech who made a fine diving stop to preserve his clean sheet. Kalou then capped Chelsea's fine effort as he took a flick on from Ballack and carried the ball into the box before sliding a low shot into the lower right corner. In other EPL action on Wednesday, Newcastle stopped Aston Villa 3-1 at St James' Park and Bolton could only take a point away from their contest against Charlton as the teams finished 1-1.
